YOUNG PEOPLE - HOW TO SPOT THE WARNING SIGNS OF CSE

It can be difficult to spot the warning signs, especially if it’s someone you care about,and  trust who’s exploiting you.

ANY OF THESE COULD BE SIGNS OF SEXUAL EXPLOITATION.

SOMEONE IS:

  • Threatening to end your relationship if you don’t have sex
  • Wanting you to have sex with other people – they may make you feel guilty or threaten you if you say no
  • Expecting sex in return for food or a place to stay
  • Sharing drugs or alcohol with you in return for sexual acts
  • Threatening to stop being friends if you don’t perform sexual ‘dares’
  • Giving you gifts or money in return for sexual acts
  • Asking you to take sexual photos or videos of yourself and  share them online or by text
  • Threatening to humiliate you or share sexual images of you if you don’t carry out more sex acts

PARENTS - HOW TO SPOT THE WARNING SIGNS OF CSE

By being aware of the warning signs you can help stop abuse. Any combination of the following may be an indication that something is wrong and you need to GET HELP or REPORT IT.

• Skipping school, coming home late or staying out overnight without explanation

• Change in appearance, or dressing in a more sexualised way

• Becoming secretive

• Always tired or sleeping at unusual times

• Drop in school performance

• Signs of physical abuse – bruising on their arms and body

• Mood swings – being more aggressive towards others

• Unexplained money or gifts, including mobile phones, which they couldn’t normally afford

• New or unexplained relationships with older people

• Having an older boyfriend or girlfriend

• Regularly using drugs or drinking alcohol

• Disengaging from family, friends and other support networks

• Self harm, such as cutting or eating disorders

• Having marks or scars on their body which they try to conceal
